07 Dec Amirah topples top seed in KL International squash juniors

Amirah Rusydina Rosli upset top seed Sneha Sivakumar of Singapore in straight sets to reach the girls’ Under-15 semi-finals in the REDtone 9th Kuala Lumpur International Junior Open squash championships.

The Form Two student of Aminuddin Baki Secondary School of Kuala Lumpur needed just 30 minutes to win 11-4, 11-2, 11-6 at the National Squash Courts in Bukit Jalil in Friday’s match.

Earlier in the first round on Wednesday, Amirah steamrolled Elmy Natasya Abdul Shukor 11-0, 11-0, 11-0, before beating joint ninth-16th seed Chloe Chieng Shiao Shven 11-5, 11-8, 11-7 on Thursday.

The joint fifth-eighth seed Amirah will face joint third-fourth seed Nurul Izzah Abdul Razak for a place in the semi-finals on Saturday.

Amirah said she was confident of beating Sneha, having beaten the Singaporean in the third round of the Malaysian Junior Open in Kuala Lumpur in April.

“I have been competing in the REDtone competition for the last three years but I have yet to win a title.

“The win over Sneha has boosted my confidence. I hope I can create another upset against Nurul to reach the final,” said Amirah, who will be competing in the prestigious British Junior Open in Sheffield from Jan 2-6.

In the boys’ Under-15 category, joint fifth-eighth seed Duncan Lee Yung Yii fought tooth and nail for 90 minutes before upsetting joint third-fourth seed Mohammad Rezajaffar Zedah of Iran 8-11, 12-10, 7-11, 11-6, 11-9 in the quarter-finals.

Duncan will face Bukit Jalil Sports School (BJSS) team-mate and top seed Muhammad Hafiz Zhafri Abdul Harif for a place in the final.

Hafiz had no problem beating compatriot Muhd Aqif Azahari 11-8, 11-1, 11-5 in the last eight.
