The Malaysia Digital Economy Corp (MDEC) and UK Trade & Investment (UKTI) will jointly promote Internet of Things (IoT), Cloud, Big Data Analytics (BDA), Cybersecurity, e-Commerce, financial technology and artificial intelligence.

“It is becoming increasingly important for Malaysia to collaborate with other pioneers in this sector to further push the boundaries of innovation,” said Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC) chief executive officer Datuk Yasmin Mahmood.

British High Commissioner to Malaysia H.E. Vicki Treadell, who witnessed the signing of a memorandum of understanding between the two government agencies, said the UK wants to partner Malaysia in cross-cutting technology look forward to being a partner of choice to MDEC in developing Malaysia’s ICT ecosystem.

Treadell spoke of British aerospace and defence company BAE Systems’ latest initiative in extending collaboration with CyberSecurity Malaysia, to develop cyber defence capability in Malaysia.

“The availability of high-skilled human capital is one of the main reasons BAE Systems have chosen Kuala Lumpur as its regional hub,” said Treadell.

BAE Systems has a long history with Malaysia’s defence industry, having supplied naval equipment for more than 40 years. It is the largest supplier of equipment to the Malaysian Armed Forces and more recently, fighter jets to the Royal Malaysian Air Force.

Also present at the signing ceremony were UK Prime Minister’s Trade Envoy to Malaysia Richard Graham, Malaysian Ministry of Communications and Multimedia secretary-general Datuk Seri Dr Sharifah Zarah Syed Ahmad and MDEC chief operating officer Datuk Ng Wan Peng, UKTI Head of Trade Technology Team Andrew Cockburn.
